windowsold-and-its-gone.jpg?fit=458%2C343

What is the Windows.old Folder?

Have you recently upgraded from an old version of Windows? Have you stumbled across a Windows.old folder on your computer, and it’s using up a large amount of disk space?
Well the good news is, you can delete it. However you cant just delete it like you would a normal folder.

The Windows.old folder has been around for some time and you will only be seeing it if you purchased a new version of Windows or you decided to install a fresh version of Windows without deleting the old version.

Hiren’s BootCD is an independent CD that contains a start sequence with an extensive software and utilities list grouped by category so your equipment will have everything it needs. That way you also don’t have to download these tools one by one from Internet. Lots of them have a similar function and can look redundant but they normally have an important difference or they complement each other.

Windows XP

Windows XP (codenamed Whistler) is a personal computer operating system that was produced by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It was released to manufacturing on August 24, 2001, and broadly released for retail sale on October 25, 2001.

Development of Windows XP began in the late 1990s as “Neptune”, an operating system built on the Windows NT kernel which was intended specifically for mainstream consumer use—an updated version of Windows 2000 was also originally planned for the business market. However, in January 2000, both projects were shelved in favour of a single OS codenamed “Whistler”, which would serve as a single OS platform for both consumer and business markets. Windows XP was a major advance from the MS-DOS based versions of Windows in security, stability and efficiency due to its use of Windows NT underpinnings. It introduced a significantly redesigned graphical user interface and was the first version of Windows to use product activation in an effort to reduce its copyright infringement.

[FREE] Tools for USB Booting

bootable-usb-iso-670x335.jpg?fit=670%2C335

What is a bootable USB?

A Bootable USB or USB booting is the process of using an external USB drive to load a computer operating system. A common use for this is troubleshooting a faulty or virus ridden machine, You could also boot into other operating systems such as OpenElec for Media Streaming or Lakka for an old school gaming experience. Some of these apps are more powerful than others. While some will do a-bit-for-bit copy, others create a full ISO of your running system. Some are Windows specific and others don’t care what platform you’re running. In the end, what’s important is that you use the tool that best suits your skills and needs.

You can download one of the tools below for imaging:

Rufus

Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pen-drives, memory sticks, etc.

It can be especially useful for cases where:

  • you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • you need to work on a system that doesn’t have an OS installed
  • you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • you want to run a low-level utility

Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need!
